Piccolo, who died of cancer at age 26, was a standout running back and graduate from St. Thomas Aquinas. The Piccolo family has since established the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, which has raised millions of dollars for cancer research. He received Wake Forests Employee of the Year Award in 2004 when he worked in the Public Affairs office. The movie Brians Song came out the next year. Dawkins, who serves on Duke Universitys Brain Tumor Program Board of Advisors, has his own family cancer stories. When I attended, they showed Brians Song to all the incoming freshmen.
