Adopted in 1918, the Big Red One is now recognized throughout the world wherever the division has served. The 1st Divisions contributions to this nations defense offer insights into the history of the Army and the United States. For five years the Big Red One fought main force Viet Cong (VC) and regular North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces in the jungles northwest of Saigon. Brigades rotated every six months. Its third brigade was stationed in West Germany as the 1st Infantry Division (Forward). The troops suffered too many casualties before. Main focuses of the brigade and PRT were to protect population centers such as Jalalabad and Asadabad and help develop the local economy through the construction of roads, and provide security while doing so. The division then drove across France in a continuous offensive. The 198th and 11th deactivated, but the 196th moved up to the Danang area where it remained until August 1972. Making use of communication and maintaining intervals while on patrol, however, are still important duties of a professional soldier, which has been exemplified by the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq. 1991-1996: On March 8th, 1991, the 1st Division (Forward) was deactivated.
