What kinds of conversations have you had with the showrunners, Brian Koppelman and David Levien, about how they even came to creating Taylor, who quickly became a major character in the universe? There are certainly situations where Im not correcting people. Sun: It is also great to see that spoiler alert when Taylor briefly breaks away and sets up their own rival firm for a while, basically Axe and Wags spent an entire season plotting how to take you down, but at no point did they entertain weaponizing gender identity against you or anything like that. How did you find your way to The Adjudicator? Are these more current animated series more intentional on the parts of their creators? How was that? We dont have to confine you in the same way that we always have. Like, how can I be this thing if people cant see it, if Im not showing it in some way via a physical, medical change? I hope that wasnt too rambling. Dillon identifies as non-binary and uses singular they pronouns. There is a whole storyline about two aliens; theyre non-binary aliens. Sun: That is a perfect example. White: In animation, because it is such a fluid medium, because it doesnt have to ascribe to the physical realism that exists in live-action film and TV, you can be super expressive, and I think theres a long history of people exploring gender intentionally and unintentionally through animation. Its about changing and evolving the material that is created within quote-unquote Hollywood.. My mom was a pop culture hound; all of my pop culture interests really derived from her and my relationship with her. Like donuts and candy. And I think thats part of the larger history around non-binary representation in film and television. I dont want to give an excuse and say trial and error, but you do see a lot of errors on the interminable road of progress. How did the costuming go?The designer and the producers had a vision and they asked me if I was comfortable. "I love that I am trans. Maybe because it feels like not a safe space. So there are going to be narratives that at the time were incredibly progressive that now were just like, Yikes, lets not do that again.. And then what representation would I change? Whats interesting following that and the gates that have opened for trans actors is that trans actors were still kind of operating in that binary of what Hollywood thought a man and a woman really was. And its past time. What does that look like? I love wearing wigs. Ive seen that discourse, that conversation starting to happen online and in the real world, but to see that actually written into a show is cool. Thats really all that they have. Theyre not gendered, and the pronouns are very purposeful, and thats based off, [according to] the experts that Ive talked to, a really age-appropriate way to reach kids that they can understand. You kind of feel like you're chasing something you can never attain. Honestly, I feel like I dont have an answer for that, because I dont think theres anything that I would throw under the bus. To see a trans body in this ideal spaceon a cover, in an adthese are spaces that have immense cultural power to dictate what is beautiful, what is glamorous, what is aspirational, what is sexy, what is clean. And if we are trying to award art that is representational of everyone, then we need to be representing everyone, and abolishing gendered awards is one part of the change that needs to happen., Elsewhere in the show, THR associate editor Abbey White discusses the genres where gender exploration has taken place the most: science fiction and, perhaps surprisingly, animation. I think its the intent and the knowledge that goes into that and the level of sensitivity that actually ultimately matters. And shes kind of sturdy. They spend a lot of times being the butts of jokes. It isnt just about abolishing the categories. Nothing has come my way where Im like, God, that feels really awful. And that may just be because I havent seen it, like someone might call or write into your podcast and be like, Well, you have to watch this because it exists and its awful. And then I will, and Ill be like, Oh God, that is pretty terrible.. I think a lot of the womens movement is perpetuating the synonymous use of woman and vagina, and not all women have vaginas, not all people with vaginas are women. And that gender identity is placed on top of that assigned sex. It was very overdue. So its realistic to think that we might see this someday. That sounds juicy, tell me more about that.Theres a lot of healthy food on both sets, which is really nice. I mean, because the trick of Pat was Pat just was clueless. So thats GLAADs poll, and also people saw the movie and tweeted at me or messaged me and said, like, I cant believe theres a non-binary character in this movie. I mean, every press release that came out about the movie where I was talking about it, I was very upfront: This character is non-binary, it wasnt written that way, the studio and Chad Stahelski and Keanu, they loved it. And I think these are rooms with people who are somewhat familiar with gender identity or the concept of pronouns, or certainly when I use mine could be like, What did that mean? So yes, Im just relating to the fact that, as you said, the burden is always on or predominantly on non-binary or trans people, gender nonconforming people, to say, like, Heres how Im different instead of the burden or the joy actually on all of us getting to self-determine, be autonomous and have that respected. "I think it's important to be able to be like, 'Yes, your shoulders are broad, yes your hands are big and your voice is deep and you're really tall and people notice you, and that makes you noticeably trans, but that doesn't make you any less beautiful. Not everyone identifies within the binary, they say. Prior to that, there have been various examples through the years. And then when I was cast as Taylor, it felt like the shorter buzz just felt right for the character, honestly, so thats why Ive maintained it. And so the future, to me, is inclusive, and its intersectional, certainly. Keanu Reeves had the idea for a character who wasnt going to take up physical arms in this movie, who had a different kind of power, a quiet power. Even if nothing in the script or the filming changes, whats the significance of a move like that? Some of it feels a little weird. Theyre also the most down to fashion-clown on a rainy day in New York City. The star, who also identifies as gender non-binary in real life, doesn't mind answering questions about what that means. Watching a lot of kids cartoons, where theres increasing conversation about the impact of gender stereotypes and what that reinforces in cisgender and non-binary and trans kids and maybe how damaging that can be when you watch some of these cartoons, its not even just blue is for boy and pink is for girl. Its like, a car has to have eyelashes, which is a weird thing because its assuming, one, that men and boys dont have eyelashes. These are excerpts from the conversation. They noted about being nonbinary, Its a term used by some people, myself included, who experience their gender identity as falling somewhere outside the boxes of man or woman. I am a transgender female. And I figured, particularly when it comes to understanding gender identities along the spectrum, that I personally need some table-setting for education. Like, why are you all so obsessed with Pats gender? Talking about gender and gender representation is seen as a joke, and its not always treated with sensitivity. Dillon: Yes, certainly. Im really grateful for that, Dillon tells Yahoo Lifestyle at New York Citys Build Studio (part of Yahoos parent company, Oath), where they had dropped by for a live studio interview. And I was thinking that Taylor can be held up in many ways as a universal example of that positive representation not just for non-binary identity, but for so many of the characters on Billions, I feel like the writers have done a great job of making them authentically and organically the identity that they have, whether its racial or gender or different ways, but its never the focus of what their storyline or what their character is all about. Its about making space for everyone. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. And so that is very special, but yeah, we talk about mostly where Taylor is coming from emotionally and why they are the way they are and why they are behaving the way theyre behaving and doing what theyre doing. Im a marginalized person because Im nonbinary, but I carry white body privilege. And I was like, Oh, this wild, funny, sturdy, pink character is sort of embodying the ways that I think my gender presents, which is not a binary, its not clearly defined. Anyway, I have this because you never know if theres going to be food somewhere. Asia has mentioned that they are attracted to both males and females. Getting to wear drag is super fun. And you will frankly eliminate the likelihood that you have a non-binary character that Im going to go, God, you really need to do that over because that was bad.. Sun: Yes, thank you. Dillon: The aspect of gender identity, specifically? And, mind you, that is not always how trans people describe being trans or encapsulating the trans identity.
